People search this question when they are comparing a window unit, a mini-split, and a full central system. Those are not the same product. The $3,500–$12,000 band covers a lot of honest residential work in our area. It does not cover every mansion, every new duct system, or a bargain Facebook special.
By system type
| System | Typical installed range | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Window / portable (you install) | $300–$800 | One room, rental, temporary |
| Single-zone mini-split | $3,500–$7,500 | One room, garage, addition |
| Multi-zone mini-split | $8,000–$18,000+ | House without usable ducts |
| Central AC change-out | $5,500–$12,000 | Existing ducts in decent shape |
| Central AC + major duct work | $10,000–$20,000+ | Comfort problem is distribution |
What is inside a central AC price
- Outdoor condenser and indoor coil (and sometimes the furnace or air handler).
- Line set, pad or stand, disconnect, whip, condensate, and thermostat.
- Permit, city inspection, and recovery of the old refrigerant.
- Labor: recovery, removal, set, braze, evacuate, charge, startup.
- Haul-away and a clean job site — if it is not on the quote, ask.
What actually drives the final number
Equipment tier and staging (single vs two-stage vs variable) move the price thousands. So does access: a condenser on a hillside with no gate is not a driveway pad job. Electrical upgrades, a long line-set run, a second-story coil, and attic furnaces all add labor.
Ductwork is the silent multiplier. A $7,000 condenser on 40% leaky ducts is a $7,000 way to cool the attic. I would rather see a $6,500 system and $2,000 of mastic and returns than an $11,000 inverter on the same leaks.
Labor vs equipment
Homeowners sometimes shop equipment online and want 'just labor.' On a permitted, warrantied central system that is rarely how it works. Matching, charging, and standing behind the job are the product. The lowest labor bid is often the one that skips evacuation time, permit, or startup measurements.
How to get a number you can trust
- Get the scope in writing: models, AHRI match, what happens to ducts, permit included or not.
- Ask for static pressure at startup.
- Compare the same system type. A mini-split quote vs a central quote is apples and oranges.
- Ignore a price that is thousands below everyone else unless you like being the training job.
